Chris Beardshaw of BBC Gardeners’ World believes container gardening is a great way to spruce up outdoor space. His favorite plants for pots include colorful cosmos and aromatic scented pelargoniums. Agapanthus (aka, South African lily) is another great flower for pots because its bulbs like being congested. Mint works well because the container controls the herb’s vigorous nature, while alpines require rarefied conditions that are easier to recreate in a container. Beardshaw also names hostas and buxus as good container plants.

Key Takeaways:

  • Cosmos are great plants for pots because they come in many different colors and they have very large flowers.
  • Mint is a valuable plant as it can be used in food and drinks and also can be mixed with other pots as well.
  • Echiums has beautiful blue flowers that emanate from it and they also have spikes at the end as well. They are typically grown outdoors in colder winters.

“”They come in a variety of colours, whites and pastel pinks being the classic options, but look out for intense varieties – such as Cosmos atrosanguineus ‘Chocolate’ or Cosmos bipinnatus ‘Sonata Carmine’ – to add a bit of drama.”
