Growing Tomato Plants in Containers

If you’re a newbie gardener, and are still confused with what to plant to start your journey, then consider planting tomatoes. Tomatoes of all kinds thrive in pots, as long as these pots are of good size. Kansas City master gardener Kathy Hoggard recommends pots at least 20 inches across the top and 24 inches deep for tomatoes. It is also important to note that pots of different materials may affect your tomatoes’ growth. Terracotta pots, for example, are beautiful but lose moisture through the clay’s pores. Moreover, Hoggard suggests exposing your plant to 6-8 hours of sun a day, preferrably in the morning. She also stresses the importance of good air circulation, potting mix, and water.
