Cat (Felis catus) is the smallest domesticated member of the Felidae family in the order Carnivora. It is also known as a house cat or domestic cat. Domestic cats have low-slung bodies, beautifully sculpted heads, and long tails that help them balance. They also have specialized teeth and claws that fit them admirably to a life of active hunting, just like all felids. Like their wild relatives, cats are primarily carnivorous, highly agile and powerful, and well-coordinated in their movements.

It’s worth noting that the dog’s predecessors were social creatures who lived in packs and were subordinate to a leader. The dog has easily shifted its allegiance from a pack leader to a human master. On the other hand, the cat has been more resistant to subjection. As a result, unlike most domesticated dogs, the house cat can rapidly and successfully revert to complete self-reliance. 

Different Breeds

Domestic, purebred, or hybrid cats exist. Purebred cats have a pedigree history of their lineage, whereas domestic cats do not. Domesticated cats that have crossed with wild feline types are known as hybrids. The Cat Fanciers’ Association in the United States is the top pedigree certifying body. It recognizes 45 different purebred cat breeds.

Siamese

This cat breed originated in Thailand and has been popular since the nineteenth century (formerly known as Siam). The Oriental shorthair, sphynx, and Himalayan descended from the Siamese. Most Siamese cats’ regions of coloring on the forehead, ears, feet, and tail are known as “points.”

One kind has an “apple” shaped head and a chubbier body, while the other has a bigger head and a skinny body. Bengals

They are available in various colors and patterns, including spots and rosettes. Prionailurus bengalensis is the scientific name for the Asian leopard cat. Bengals were created by crossing domestic cats with a wildcat. This animal is also responsible for its gorgeous designs.

Abyssinian

The Abyssinian cat, which originated in Ethiopia (previously known as Abyssinia), has a distinctive banded appearance due to its ruddy agouti coat. In addition, it features a wedge-shaped head, tall, sharp ears, and a slim, muscular body. Abys have an energetic, curious personality and frequently follow their owners around. Birmans

Birmans, like the Siamese and ragdoll, is color-pointed cats. They are distinguished from Persians and Himalayans by their blue eyes and medium-length coat with no undercoat. American Shorthair

Genetta

Cat’s Lifespan

Considering their diminutive size, cats may live an incredibly long life. Smaller mammals, in general, have shorter lifespans, but cats are an exception. Cats, for example, live longer than most dogs despite their smaller size. 

A pet cat’s typical lifespan is probably around 13 to 14 years. On the other hand, a well-cared-for cat can live to be 15 years old or more, with some living to be 18 or 20, and a few exceptional felines living to be 25 or 30 years old.

Cat years to human years

Cats mature at a significantly faster rate than humans. Still, their outer look does not alter much for several years once they are entirely grown physically and behaviorally – about three years of age. As a result, they frequently look to be relatively young, and determining the age of an adult cat can be difficult.

Cat Grooming

Grooming your cat should be enjoyable for both you and them. Grooming sessions should be scheduled when your cat is quiet and sleepy, like after dinner. You should also be in a good attitude since if you’re grumpy or anxious during the grooming procedure, the cat will pick up on it and get stressed.

The first few times you brush your cat, they may become frustrated with all the attention. Keep the first few sessions brief, no more than five or 10 minutes. Once your cat has been accustomed to the routine, progressively increase the amount of time you spend cleaning them.

Here are some tips to remember when grooming your cat.

1. When your pet is young, begin grooming them. Grooming is more acceptable to kittens since mother cats groom their young; thus, it feels normal. Handling your kitten allows them to become accustomed to being held and touched. You can train your elder cat by giving them extra attention, but if feasible, begin when they are young.
2. Brush them regularly. To prevent matting and hairballs, brush short-haired cats once a week and long-haired cats twice a week. Keep sessions short if your cat squirms. However, use a decent brush to remove extra furs, such as a comb, soft rubber brush, or bristle brush.
3. When your cat is relaxed, bath them. Fill a sink or tub halfway with water. Slowly pour water over your cat using a water bottle or jug, avoiding the face and head (this is key). Begin at the neck and work your way down the body with a cat-safe shampoo designed specifically for cats. Pour clean water over the suds, ensuring all shampoo residue is removed. Keep a large towel on, ready to lift your cat out of the water and properly dry them. A dry shampoo bath is a fantastic option for cats who cannot tolerate water.
4. Pay close attention to your ears. While bathing your cat, look for any discharge symptoms or redness in the ears and ear canals. If you want to clean your ear canals, use a cat ear cleanser and follow the manufacturer’s directions. With a cotton ball, remove any dirt and cleaner, but avoid using Q-tips, as they might cause ear injury.
5. Every few weeks, trim your cat’s claws. Most indoor cats will have overgrown nails unless they are a persistent scratcher. These can get caught on things and cause damage. Check with your cat to see if you can touch their paws. Allow them to get acclimated to the sensation for a few weeks before clipping. When you’re both ready, gently push down and extend each paw with a cat nail trimmer to prevent the claws from retracting. Begin by clipping a tiny bit at a time, avoiding the fast cuts (the pink or red section of the claw).
6. Throughout the grooming process, reward him. Have catnip, snacks, and toys on hand before attempting to groom your cat to make the procedure more enjoyable for them. They’ll quickly learn that positive reinforcement, such as treats, can help them cope with the discomfort of grooming. They are more likely to tolerate the operation without complaint.

Cat Behavior

Cats, like humans, have distinct personalities and traits. As a result, no official list of “typical” cat behavior exists. While there are many common feline behaviors, remember that each cat is unique and may behave differently depending on its personality, environment, or mood. Purring, grooming, kneading, and climbing are some of the most typical cat habits. However, each cat will uniquely engage in these activities. 

Pay attention to your cat’s behavior and figure out what is “normal” for him so you may spot any unexpected behavior that may necessitate a trip to the veterinarian.

Body language

Mating

Cats, like dogs, have an estrous, or heat, cycle. Female cats, known as queens, are, on the other hand, induced ovulators. This means that unless they are bred, they do not ovulate. When coupled, this dramatically enhances the chances of conception, so stray queens frequently bear many kittens each year. The queen can have her first heat as early as four months. 

After that, she usually has two or three heat cycles (typically February to October in the northern hemisphere). The queen is receptive to men during heat and exhibits typical mating behavior. For example, she’ll roll around, rub against things, knead her back feet, and yowl loudly. If the queen is not bred, this behavior can last 3 to 20 days and repeat for 10 to 40 days. The cycle stops if the queen is mated as her body prepares for pregnancy.
