How to Start a Garden

There are many reasons why a person would like to start a garden. Some do it as a hobby. Others because of the need to eat healthy organic vegetables and fruits. Thus growing their own food is the way to go. Others because of the intention to save money; vegetables and fruits (especially the organic ones) have become more expensive in groceries. However, starting a garden can sometimes remain as a wishful thinking. We procrastinate or build different reasons of why we simply cannot begin or keep up.

And we hear the usual statements like:

“I would have wanted to, but I’m not a green thumb!”

“I don’t have the time to do it because of my work.”

“I simply don’t like touching the soil; it’s dirty.”

“I don’t have money to buy tools, seedlings, and seeds.”

How to Start Gardening

How do you find gardening? Do you find it daunting?

Here are simple steps to start your garden:

Step 1: Change your outlook (attitude) toward gardening. Everyone can grow a garden. Though some people are really skilled and gifted, it does not mean you cannot grow a plant. (I hope to prove that everyone can at least plant, and more so grow a garden.)

Step 2: Give time to your garden. Gardening can be a good exercise; it is therapeutic.

Step 3: There are times when we need to be dirty to stay healthy; and gardening is one of these times.

Step 4: Just start a garden with what you have. Do you know that I started my garden from the vegetable cuttings I have? Yes, you can grow the cuttings of the spices and vegetables you bought from the grocery.

How to Get Rid of Slugs in the Garden

Having slugs or even snails in your garden can be really detrimental to your plants. Moreover, even keeping them away is a greater hassle. Many opt for commercial slug pellets to get rid of them, but they’re not as effective, especially with the presence of rain. Slugs love moisture, so you might want to change your watering schedule. Since they are known to be active at night, switch up your watering schedule to daytime instead, so your plants have enough time to dry before night comes. You may also want to try adding coffee grounds to your soil too. According to a study, caffeine is said to be effective in killing or repelling slugs when applying to foliage or their growing medium.

Succulents, although famous for being low maintenance as they require only a minimal amount of water, are just like any other plant that needs some pruning and trimming now and then. Some succulents can grow larger than expected and then eventually outgrow their garden space or containers. Thus, making a few cleanups necessary. Furthermore, what makes pruning succulents great in many cases is how you can replant their cut-off portions to another container. How convenient! Just remember to take extra precautionary measures like wearing gloves to avoid hurting yourself.
