Most potting soils you find in the market are peat-based mixes. Although they work really well at first, they’re not advisable for long-term use. In fact, they’re merely made for your convenience. They’re cheaper, light-weight, but decompose quickly.

Take these steps to ensure that you’re using the right soil for your plant:

  • Repot every year.
  • Improve your bagged soil.
  • Flush the soil thoroughly every month, at a minimum.
  • Wick your pots.
  • Make your own potting mix.
